NEWSLETTER 1-26

Hi! I have to tell you all that you have the sweetest kids. As I’m sure you heard, I
was out three days this week. My entire house, including myself, was sick. It was so
great to come back to such a loving welcome. Your children are precious!
Our matter unit is in full swing. We practiced sorting items into what state of matter
it is. We tried turning a liquid into a solid today by freezing our bubbles. The large
bubble wands work best. They have lots at Dollar Tree if you want to try it at home :)!
We made edible snowflakes out of tortillas...solids are delicious! We also mixed a solid
and liquid and painted castles. We will continue with this unit through February.

WE’RE PUTTING ON A PLAY!

Our class will put on THE RUNAWAY UNICORN on Wednesday, Feb. 14th at 8:30 am in
the cafeteria. We will invite you back to our classroom following the play to share some of
our classroom work. The entire thing will last about 45 minutes. Family and friends are invited.
We are all set on boxes and empty paper rolls. Thank you so much to everyone who sent
some in. We will be painting 3-D castles soon.

VALENTINE’S DAY

We will be making special bags to collect Valentines in. Your child may start bringing in
his/her Valentines to mail in these bags on Monday, Feb. 5th. We will be opening them
at our party that afternoon. I have attached a class list. I will let you know next week with
how you can help with our party.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Grades 3-5 is putting on the musical, Alice in Wonderland on Thursday, Feb. 1st at 1:00
and again at 6:00. It is open to the whole community. Drop in and see one of the
performances! We’re excited to see many of our classmates’ siblings perform!

Hi! Happy National Popcorn Day! We celebrated with our Kindergarten
friends today by doing lots of special activities. We read books with popcorn
in them, played popcorn games, did popcorn science, wrote op words, played
popcorn word games and learned two popcorn poems. The best part is when
PTO showed up with a special popcorn snack for us! It was a fun day. We
continued to work this week with our fairy tale and matter units. Both first and
second graders finished up another unit in math. We wrote back to our California
pen pals. We also continued to practice our play, The Runaway Unicorn.

NEWSLETTER 1-12-18

Hi! We’ve finally had a full week of school...the kids asked me on Monday, “Is tomorrow Friday?” On Wednesday they asked, “Do we have school tomorrow?” Safe to say vacation and snow days have really messed with our schedule hahaha. It’s great to be back. I always love this time of year. The kids seem to have grown a foot and are ready to take on the world. Needless to say, we’ve got a lot done this week! Our themes for January are fairy tales and matter.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We are doing a play! We have started rehearsing, THE RUNAWAY UNICORN.
We will present it to family and friends on Wednesday, Feb. 14th, Valentine’s Day, at 8:30 in the cafeteria.
We will be inviting you back to our room after to share stories. It should last about 45 minutes total.
We are reading tons of fairy tales. We have been looking for the special characteristics found in
most fairy tales and even comparing some of the stories. We will use this knowledge to write our own
fairy tale! We wrote back to our pen pals this week. They are very interested in our cold temperatures
and mountains of snow. We took some pictures to show them how much snow we have. We really think
we should take a field trip to meet them and check out their warmer weather! We also have been
working on opinion writing. We wrote our opinions of whether mittens or gloves were better in the winter.

MATH

We took our NWEA math tests this week. These are standardized tests on the computer.
The second graders took them in the fall. First grade joined in on this round. The kids did great!
There are 54 questions that keep changing so I can tell exactly what they each know and where they
need work. I will be using this data to keep challenging them :)!

ITEMS OF INTEREST

  • No school Monday, Jan. 15th - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

  • We will be making castles in a couple of weeks. Please send in any shoe boxes
and/or empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls you have.

  • We changed a liquid to a solid today and made butter! It tasted yummy on our biscuits.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
2018 is off to a great start...especially if you love snow!
We used our knowledge of homophones and adjectives
to create toasts to the New Year!
We made and ate real toast as we made toast people
and wrote toasts to our school.
It was a fun way to get back into school mode :)!

Having fun acting out one of our poems
during Poetry Book time.
