First Grade News and Pics from Week Ending 3/24/23

Hi! We said a sad good-bye to one of our classmates today. We wish him well at his new school. We dove deeper into the rainforest this week. We are helping the Go2 Science scientists solve a hypothesis regarding the blue morpho butterfly. We are looking to see if blue morpho butterflies are only an umbrella species or not. This will help us see if the rest of the umbrella species are in danger from clear cutting. Today we looked at phenotypes to see which butterflies were blue morpho or not and where they lived. So far we are only finding blue morpho butterflies in the rainforest.

We read the book, The Umbrella, by Jan Brett.
We then made leafy umbrellas with rainforest animals on them.

News and Pics from Week Ending 11/17/23

 What a great week!
Skiiing finished up on Thursday. It was amazing how much the kids learned in just four lessons! If you are ever looking for great ski instructors, Hermon Mountain is your place! The kids also did really well on the lifts and hills. They were taught which trail was the best one for them to be successful. We are hoping to get back there next year! A HUGE thank you goes out to the Tilton Family for paying for half of everyone's tickets, rentals and lessons! We had 63 students participate!

Ben and Will Francis, two former VCS students, came to share Orono's Gold Ball with us!
The kids got to try on medals and touch the ball.
The boys did a great job talking to the kids about not giving up and working hard!

What would St. Patrick's Week be without leprechaun traps and fun?!
We used our engineering skills to make traps. We shared our traps with the school.
Unfortunately, we did not catch any leprechauns.
However, they did leave us treats which is just as good!

We had a special visit from an eighth grader.
It was fun having him into read to us!

Finally, some sticky snow!!

Happy Weekend!
