reading legends about him and making applesauce.

We love to play math games!

We made apple pizzas today...YUM!
(English Muffins, sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon and butter)
They'd be great for breakfast!

We had an extra treat...one of our classmates brought in a veggie platter!! It was a great afternoon snack!

One of the coupons you can get when you turn in ten gems is
Show and Share.  We had a special visit today because of this...
Welcome Daisy!!
We had an awesome day watching and learning about
Daisy, the hamster!

Sharing a story.

Daisy actually went up to each first grader inside her ball.
What a great way to say Good Morning!

Daisy was SO tired after meeting us.
We loved watching her sleep...so sweet!

Daisy woke up when she smelled our apple pizzas.
She loved the piece of apple we shared with her!

Good-bye Daisy...until your next visit! <3

HAPPY WEEKEND!

FIRST GRADE NEWS
SEPTEMBER 28
MRS. KIMBALL

Dear Parents,

Hi! What a busy week we have had! We took advantage of the new season
and did lots of Fall and apple work. We celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday
on Wednesday by reading lots of legends about him and making homemade
applesauce. Our room smelled wonderful! We found the star inside the apple
and used it to stamp our apple poem. We learned to spell apple through a poem
in our Poetry Books. We wove apple paper baskets that hold apples with adjectives
describing ourselves on them. We looked at the parts of a nonfiction apple book.
As a fun finale, we made apple pizza today...delicious! Next week we will read lots
of Oliver Jeffers’ books.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We have been reading lots of books during Reading Workshop. We are almost
ready to start guided reading groups which means you will see books start to come
home in folders. If you see a book in your child’s folder (that is not a library book),
please have him/her read it to you for practice. It is a good idea to tell them the title
and ask them a little about the book before they begin. This will get their mind ready
for the story. It is okay to help them if they get stuck. We are working to make sure
what we read makes sense and looks right. Books should be returned the next
school day.

MATH

We are working with counting on in addition. Say the largest number and count
up the other number. We are also working with ways to make ten so they know
these facts quickly. Take ten pennies, hide some in one hand, give them the rest.
They should then figure out how many pennies you are hiding. It’s a fun game we
have been playing (we just hide them under a paper plate).

MORNING WORK

You might have noticed some different papers coming home this week that have
days on the top. This is our new morning work. It has ELA and Math skills for the
students to practice. We go over it together after they’ve tried on their own. Since
we correct it together they just bring them home. It will give you an idea of what they
should be able to do independently in grade one.

FRIENDSHIP DAY 9-21-18

Today was such a great day! We celebrated friendship!
We spent time reading friendship books, telling each other the nice things we think about them, signing pictures, making friendship bread and playing together. It was so nice to hear them recognize each other. Their free time at the end of all of this was fun to watch. So many strong friendships being made.

And as Pooh says,
We'll be friends until forever!

I'm having a wonderful time working with your kids!
HAPPY WEEKEND!
