PICS FROM 5-26

Our dress up box never gets old! It's fun to pretend as we learn and grow!

A couple of pictures from our Spring Concert Rehearsal.
The kids did a great job at the concert Wednesday afternoon.

We learned about lobsters and orcas as we explored the ocean.

Thursday mornings are dedicated to Lego Robotics.
It's so much fun to watch the kids build and program with the WeDo2 program.

And yes, we even programmed our cars to drive down the hall :)!

NEWSLETTER 5-26-16

Hi! We have “arrived” at the Atlantic Ocean. We learned about lobstering as a career and about lobsters in general. We also learned about orcas. We are having fun decorating the room with sea life!  Don’t forget to check out the upcoming dates. This year is heading to an end too quickly!!

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We finished the book, ANDRE. The kids loved it. They do have a movie out if any of you are looking for something to watch on a rainy summer day. Unfortunately, there is a swear word used twice in it, one of the milder t.v. ones. Not sure why they need to do that when they know it’s a movie for kids…grrr…rant over. It’s pretty cool to watch though because it shows real footage of Andre at the end. The kids also know that the movie was filmed in Canada using a sea lion…crazy I know!
We are still working on answering reading comprehension questions. They are getting better at using the question to create their answer. Keep reading for Books for Bikes! If you need tickets or books, your child knows where to get them :)!
MATH

We worked with identifying which strategies are our favorite to use when adding. We used function machines to practice addition and subtraction by ten. We continued to work with fractions and shapes.
LEGO ROBOTICS
  • We did a new Lego Robotics build on today. Everyone was able to build a car that actually moved and made noise. We will be spending every remaining Thursday morning building and programming with the WeDo Lego Robotics. They are getting so good at it!

NEWSLETTER 5-20

Hi! We “traveled” down the Penobscot River this week to the Atlantic Ocean. We learned about the river and the animals that live around it. We talked about the differences between river and ocean water.  We will be learning about the animals and plants in the ocean through the end of the year.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We are working on answering reading comprehension questions. I am teaching them to use the question to create their answer. Keep reading for Books for Bikes! If you need tickets or books, your child knows where to get them :)!
We wrote stories about a day when we found a new type of river. We definitely have some creative kids…ask your child what kind of river s/he found. We painted pictures to go with our stories.

MATH

We used the “vending machine” to practice adding two digit numbers. We continue to divide shapes into parts to practice comparing fractions.

LEGO ROBOTICS

We did a new Lego Robotics build on Thursday. Everyone was able to build a robot that pulled a trailer. We will be spending every remaining Thursday morning building and programming with the WeDo Lego Robotics. It’s amazing to watch the kids in action as they build, code, solve problems and communicate with each other!

A WEEK IN PICTURES 5-13-16

Thank you to everyone who donated books to our room from the book fair!
We were very excited to check them out :)!

We had fun trying out some rain forest fruit, mango and pineapple.
We learned how to test a pineapple to see if it's ready to eat.
We dipped bananas in chocolate and froze them for an after play snack.

Show and Share...a crystal heart made from Borax and hot water.
You can find a short video on how to make these here:
You can also read how to make Borax Crystal ornaments here:

We loved turning our room into a rain forest!

We brought our Environmental/Rain Forest Unit to a close today with a play.
First Grade performed AN EARTH DAY CAROL. They were awesome!!

We loved having our families join us in our classroom
after the play to share our stories and snacks!

We were very sad to say good-bye to Haley and Adam today!

We started practicing our Primary Wing Musical, GO FISH, today!
Mark your calendar for Tuesday, June 14th at 1:00!

We went to see the Intermediate Wing Musical, WE ARE MONSTERS today.
It was AWESOME!
We especially loved seeing all our classmates' siblings!!

One more huge shout out to Grade One for a TERRIFIC performance this morning.
I couldn't be more proud of them!
