First Grade Pictures 9-25-20

Here's to another great week of bubbles, gardening, digging up fossils, learning and having fun together!

Happy Weekend!

First Grade News 9-25-20

Hi! It's been another great week! We are having so much fun! We have a bunch of hard working, creative and friendly kids! They make everything we do fun with their enthusiasm and eagerness to learn.

Reading and Language Arts

We had fun reading the class book we made, Wishy-Washy Kids. It came home today. Make sure your child reads it to you. We read the book, Quick as a Cricket, and worked with contractions. We used the pattern in the book to make a new book called, First Grade Superheroes. It was a multi step project which had us painting a sunset, creating a city skyline, getting our picture taken as we flew through the air and writing about ourselves. We worked with the reading strategies of looking at the pictures to get the meaning of the story and getting our mouth ready with the first sound to figure out words.

Math

We worked with reading and writing tally marks, writing numbers 1-20, counting by 1, 2, 5 and 10. We practiced counting up and back from various numbers on a number line. We played Rolling for 50, Penny/Dice game, Bunny Hop and Rock, Paper, Scissors. We started our unit one assessment. This is given one on one to make sure math is assessed not reading. It also lets me take notes on strategies that they use as they work on problems.

Extra Items

* We took the Math and Reading NWEAs this week. These are online standardized assessments that let us know exactly where each student is and where we should go next.

* In Go2Science we learned about gastroliths and how fossilized poop can tell us lots about an animal and the habitat that it had lived in. We are learning lots about avian and non avian dinosaurs.

* We became paleontologists and actually went on our own fossil dig. Ask your child how many fossils they dug up with their toothpicks and paintbrushes.

* We found Silly Putty in the Guess Box.

* We dug up the potatoes in the school garden. We can't wait to try the potato salad Betsy is going to make for school lunches sometime!

* We pretended we were Mrs./Mr. Wishy-Washy and washed our towels and/or blankets. The kids LOVED putting their towel/blanket in the washing machine. Maybe a new chore? ;)

Happy Weekend!

Pics From Week Ending 9-18-20

Hi!
What a great, first full week we have had! We got lots accomplished. We started our math and spelling books. We did lots of reading and writing work with the Wishy-Washy books. We looked for chunks in words and patterns in rhymes. We have our own book boxes now that have books we can read by ourselves in them. We practiced counting by 1,2,5 and 10. We worked with our number lines to practice counting up and back from various numbers. We played Number Squeeze, Top It, Penny/Dice and Bunny Hop (all math games). We used our chrome books for Prodigy, Lalilo and Rocket Spelling. We started our first mission in Go2Science. Beth and Curtis actually answered some of our questions live on their show. It was so cool to have them talking to us! We learned how the Earth is made up of layers and how the further you dig, the older the layer. We made some of our own layers. Mrs. Richard brought in shell fossils that she found in Maine. They were so cool to look at. Mr. Cyr came and read to us! We ended our week by eating and playing in mud...haha...jk! We used chocolate pudding to paint a mud scene. We then used bubble wrap to print suds. Next week we will use them to make a Wishy-Washy book.

Again, what a great week! We couldn't ask for better kids!
You should be very proud of them. They are working hard and keeping safe!
Have an awesome weekend.
