FIRST GRADE NEWS 1-4-19

FIRST GRADE NEWS
JANUARY 4th
MRS. KIMBALL

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! It's great to be back. The kids seem like they all grew a foot and are ready to work. We are totally spaced out in grade one! We are having fun checking out all of the cool space stuff in our room. We made ourselves into astronauts for our window. We started learning about gravity, the sun and The Milky Way Galaxy.

We did a few New Year activities. We made toast people and made "toasts" to the New Year...of course we made and ate real toast as well! We read a book called THREE WISHES. It tells about how you get three wishes if you find a penny with your birthdate on it on New Year's Day. We then wrote about our own wishes. We had fun sharing our New Year homework on what was our favorite part of 2018 and what we want to do in 2019.

We will be throwing in some snow activities during the month even though we are concentrating on space. Today we read The Snow Child. We stuffed our own snow baby to keep after.

MATH

We started practicing our math facts by playing Level Up. Each day we take a timed test of twenty-five problems. If we get them all done correctly in the time, we move to the next level. If not, we fix or finish for homework and try the level again the next day.
We started using rulers to compare lengths. We are using greater than and less than. We are also still working on place value by counting tens and ones.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

*  We got mail! We got a great package sent from Austin, Texas. We even got to try armadillo poop...
it was really chocolate taffy ;).

*  No progress notes this week because it was a short, get used to school, week.

*  Ask your child what we found in the Guess Box.

HAPPY WEEKEND!
