Hi! It's great to be back in the swing of things. We finished up our space unit and started learning about tropical rainforests. We will be learning about how rainforests help the Earth, the animals that live there and the plants that grow in them. This unit will go until April vacation.
We spent a couple of days learning about Theodor Geisel, Dr. Seuss. We had fun reading some of his books and learning about his life.
We are doing an author study on Robert Munsch. He is a fabulous author for first grade. His books have lots of repetition and patterns. Even better, they are hysterical! The kids love them!
Next week, swim/gym begins. Each Tuesday we will spend the afternoon at the Old Town YMCA. Please make sure your child has a bathing suit and towel in its own separate bag. This will keep the stuff in their backpack dry. Students may also bring goggles if they wish. The ones that cover the nose are not allowed. Sneakers and comfy clothes should be worn for the gym portion.
We started learning about time in math. We made clocks today with our peer helpers. Ask your child to show you some times. We are working on time to the hour right now and knowing the difference between the minute hand and the hour hand.
We will be using our engineering skills to make leprechaun traps on Tuesday, March 14th. Please have your child start collecting things s/he might want to use to make their trap. Ideas are: empty boxes, anything shiny, Lucky Charms, glitter, stickers and ribbons. Anything extra you have laying around at home that they can build with. Dollar Tree also has some neat stuff. However, please do not feel you have to go buy anything. We will have things at school for them to use as well. We will present our traps to the school on Wednesday, March 15th and leave then leave the traps out to see if we can catch us a leprechaun!
