NEWSLETTER 1-6-17

SECOND GRADE NEWS 1-6-17

Hi! It’s great to be back! The kids all look older if that’s possible! We eased back into work mode. We talked about resolutions and how we can make ourselves, our homes and our community a better place. We also began our new science unit on Matter. We will be working with this theme through February break.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

Cynthia Rylant is our author of the month. She has written the HENRY AND MUDGE, GOOSEBERRY PARK, POPPLETON, HIGH-RISE PRIVATE EYES, and LIGHTHOUSE FAMILY series. We are using her books to talk about the different parts of stories and character traits.
We worked on brainstorming and writing rough drafts before settling in on our final draft. We used our resolutions to practice this. Rough drafts came home. Our final copies will be in our end of year anthologies.

MATH

We started our new math journals. We can already feel them starting to get harder! We are working with money;  adding coins and making change. A great idea to help your child with this is to empty your pockets each night and have them count your coins (or give them a handful out of a piggy bank). You can also have them try to make a certain amount in different ways. Also coin riddles are quite challenging...can you make $0.45 with eight coins.

NWEA

Second Grade, along with third through eighth, will be taking the NWEA math portion the end of next week. This will be the first time for your kids to take a standardized test. They will be using their Chrome Books to take it. The test adjusts to find their level. I hear it is usually around a 45 minute test. However, it is different for each student.

A FEW FINAL NOTES

We will have a University of Maine sophomore, education student observing next week. Her name is Miss Nickerson. January Book Orders are due Friday, Jan. 13th.

Progress Notes will start back up again next Friday.

Happy Weekend!
