FIRST GRADE NEWS

Hi! We finished our first full week of school! We got a lot accomplished and had fun! We are finishing up our unit on routines and will be heading into one on being a SUPER friend. We will continue with that theme through September.
MATH
We finished our unit one assessment and have started unit two. Unit two works with making the kids become VERY comfortable with the many ways to make ten. We use ten frames and making ten games to accomplish this. Any help at home with this would be great.
READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS
We worked with big books to practice reading strategies. We are looking at pictures to get the meaning of the story in our heads to help us figure out new words. We are continuously asking, “Does it look right? Does it sound right? Does it make sense?” Do they letters match the sounds that are given, does it sound right grammar wise in the sentence and does it make sense in the story? If we answer yes, then we move on and keep reading.
We made a new book called LAZY FIRST GRADE. It is a rewrite of the big book, LAZY MARY. We love reading it. It will come home as soon as students can part with it in their book box.
We had a writing prompt to see what we can write without any help from an adult. This is very hard for many. We are working on taking a risk and just writing what we think it is. Spelling is not as important as getting our ideas on paper independently. Any writing you see at home, please make a big deal about :)!
