FIRST GRADE NEWS 11-22-19

Hi! We have had a busy week! We finished up our unit on Native American Legends. We learned about turkeys and the first Thanksgiving. On Monday and Tuesday we will have two special days devoted to STEM activities and challenges! It’s going to be lots of mind boggling fun!
We will start a unit on traditions when we get back from November break. Each child is assigned a day in December to share a family tradition. This can be anything that you do as a family each year. For example: Friday night is pizza and board game night, sharing a stocking you hang out each year, going to get an ice cream on the last day of school. You may bring pictures, an object or just come ready to talk. Thank you for your help. The kids always love sharing what they do with their family!

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We worked together to read a non-fiction book on turkeys. We talked about each page and picked out interesting facts to highlight. We used our information to write informational papers. They did an awesome job on their first research paper.

MATH

We finished up unit five. It was fun using rulers. We used them to measure and draw. We are getting really good at doubles especially through ten. We’re still working on double sums to twenty. We are adding multiple numbers. We look for all the numbers that will make ten and then add in the rest. We used our knowledge of ways to make ten to add larger numbers to find the next ten (87 + ___ = 90 is like 7 + 3 = 10). Our next unit will be on place value (hundreds, tens and ones), comparing numbers (< > =) and two digit addition.
ITEMS OF INTEREST
  • ●  We got some cool, new magnetic, STEM tools. We’ve been exploring with the positive and negative sides to the magnets. We now know opposites attract!
    HAPPY WEEKEND!
