First Grade News 11-20-20

Hello! We've had a jam-packed week that ended with an awesome parade! The kids had so much fun making their balloon creatures and even more fun showing them off today!! They were so creative. Thank you to everyone that was able to make it out to see us! Next week is a two day week. We have some fun STEM turkey activities we will do each day. There will be no newsletter next week. However, I'm sure there will still be pictures. :)

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We wrote and shared opinion papers about what you should eat instead of turkey on Thanksgiving. We worked on short and long vowels. We did LOTS of reading from our book boxes. We read fairy tales and talked about the special characteristics most fairy tales have in common. We ask that you keep your child reading over the November break.

MATH

We finished up unit three and took the assessment. We started unit four which will have to do mostly with measurement. It has us measuring with paperclips. However, we will be using a ruler. We will learn about inches, feet, yards, centimeters and meters. We started using calculators. The kids LOVE them! They would make a really fun Christmas gift.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

* We learned how to use Kami this week. It will help us be able to do work easier online if we go remote.

* Our last book order before Christmas went out today. You can actually order anytime if you order online. The site is www.scholastic.com. Our class code is: DV68C. You can search through fliers or type in the grade level or title or author you want. Books can now be delivered right to your house or to school. Our class gets points to earn free books for each book you order. :)

* If you would like to send in a soft, cuddly, small blanket to replace your child's towel to use on their yoga mat, I'm sure they would love it! They already have pillows. There is nothing better than cuddling up with a good book! You can also send in slippers to leave in their bins to slip on after recess.

* Masks are now required even at recess. We will give the kids five minute mask breaks each time we go out. They will also get them as they eat during snack and lunch. Please make sure your child has a fresh, clean mask on each day. We are trying our best to keep our school safe. Thank you for your help.

* Christmas ideas: (In case you are looking for anything.) writing tubs (fill it up with journals, blank paper, cards, mini stapler, markers, pencils, pens, crayons, shaped paper, stencils, stickers), books, dice, cards, calculator, tape measure, ruler, games (Sequence for kids, Monopoly for kids or adults, Sorry, Rack-o, Uno, Farkle, Yahtzee) Board/Card games are so good for the kids both socially and academically. STEM things: Magnatiles, Plus-Plus blocks, wooden blocks (I've even used the Dollar Tree Jenga games for blocks.)

Happy Weekend!
