First Grade Newsletter 11-6-20

Hi! What a week! Picture day, Google Classroom, Dia de los Muertos and Fairy Houses! We've spent quite a bit of time this week learning how to get to our own assignments through Google Classroom. The kids are doing really well with it. We're hoping that this will help if we ever go remote. So far, we have done math and science lessons/assignments this way. We are still teaching face to face. However, we throw in some short extra assignments so they can learn how to find them. We celebrated Dia de los Muertos on Monday. Senor Adrian, our Spanish teacher and dad to our twins, came in and did a craft, story and snack with us! Thank you Senor Adrian!!

We sadly finished Pixie Tricks! Those eight books have been a highlight of each day. For a fun celebration to end the series we found Pixie Sticks in the Guess Box and built fairy houses. Many chose to write in their journals about fairies. It's been great fun!

Reading and Language Arts

We learned about nouns and verbs. We are working on identifying and using them in our own writing. We are working on story writing by following the writing process: planning, writing, revising, editing and publishing. We are practicing sight words in reading and spelling. Remember when reading with your child and they come to a word they don't know to focus on: Using meaning (Does it make sense?) Structure (Does it sound write?) and Visual Information (Are there any little words or chunks that can help you?).

Math

We are working with frames and arrows, counting up and back from numbers, number formation and tallies. We are also solving problems such as: 3 + ? = 7 and 6 = ? - 1. These are tricky! Any work with these types of problems at home would be great.

Items of Interest

* We had our first ticket raffle drawing on Monday. All month students earned tickets for perseverance, kindness and hard work. Half the ticket would go into our raffle bucket. The other half went home for you to see. Mrs. Logan and I decided to pull 14 tickets instead of 3. Students were able to come up and pick a prize when their name was called. Thank you to Jeannine Peters, Vincent's grandmother, for sponsoring our first month of prizes.

* Thank you to Erin, Josie's mom, for the generous donation of Dollar Tree gift cards. We will be using these for future monthly drawings, Guess Box items and special activities!

* Parent - Teacher Conferences are Monday and Tuesday from 3:00 - 6:30.

* No school on Wednesday, November 11th.

* Early release day on Wednesday, November 18th. 12:10 dismissal. We'll be ready at 12:00. We will eat lunch at school because we eat at 11:30.

* Speaking of school lunches...we are now having hot (as in temperature) school lunches. Remember, school snack and lunch are free to the entire school. Your child is asked in the morning if they need a lunch or snack. Just in case you'd like to take advantage of this on days you know they will enjoy it!

Happy Weekend!
