First Grade News 12-4-20

Hi! We have had a fun and productive week back from break. Christmas spirit is definitely in the air. It's cute seeing the kids so excited. They're actually still working hard, too! We made Christmas "stockings" that will hang from our desks. We will be writing special letters to each other and mailing them in these stockings. We will open them on our last day together before December break, Tuesday, December 22. If your child would like to put a small (Hershey kiss, holiday sticker, drawing, pencil, lollipop, ect.) in each holiday folder they may. It is not mandatory because we will be writing friendship letters right here in class. Students have done it on their own in the past so I thought I'd put it out there.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We are having so much fun enjoying special holiday stories. Our current favorite is Pete the Cat's 12 Days of Groovy Christmas. Ask your child about it! We are writing our own stories, working with long and short vowels and practicing sight words. It's amazing how the kids are taking off in their reading and writing. We are almost done our chapter book, Charlotte's Web, too.

MATH

We are using rulers to measure in the classroom. We learned how to show the symbol for inch, ". We also know how to make sure the ruler is lined up well at the invisible zero when measuring. We have been counting by tens from various numbers. This is still tricky for some so any practice at home would be great.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

* We had the best time exploring down by the pond in back of the school. We are quite the adventurers!

* Our next early release day is Wednesday, December 9th.

* Winter break is Wednesday, December 23rd - Monday, January 4th.

*  Don't forget to check out Literacy Footprints at home if you haven't yet. It's a great way for your child to practice reading on their level.

Happy Weekend!
