First Grade News 9-23-22

Hi! What a great week! We had fun rewriting Mrs. Wishy-Washy into Wishy-Washy First Grade. We played in the "mud"and then got put in the "tub". It was really chocolate pudding and sponge painting with bubble wrap. The books will come home as students are ready to give them up from their book box.

We started using Go2Science. Each Tuesday and Thursday we go on Zoom to interact with a scientist and teacher to help them find out if their hypothesis is correct. We are trying to find out if there is drinkable groundwater underneath HIP Academy in Kenya. This has been a real eye opener for the kids as we have "toured" their school and some of the homes. They do not have running water. They walk long distances to get their jugs filled with water each day. Their houses are made from mud, clay, rocks and sticks. We get to ask questions after we see and hear from Beth and Curtis each session. We are learning lots about the scientific method.

We put poems in our poetry books. We use these to practice reading fluency. We also practice sight words. These will come home at the end of the year to keep.

First Graders were each given a free book from the program Dirigo Reads. They will receive a free book each month the entire school year.

We survived our first major storm! It was very exciting. Thankfully, it started after we all were safely in the building. It got very dark as we watched out the window. We took this opportunity to learn about thunder storms. We even got the magnets out to help explain.

Next week we will be learning about John Chapman, Johnny Appleseed. We will also do some fun activities with apples. Monday, we will make our own appleseed.

Have a great weekend!
