First Grade Newsletter 11-9-23

Hello! It was great talking to you all during conferences. We had a short but busy week. We made turkeys and wrote favorite food riddles. We also did some persuasive writing giving people some ideas of what they should eat instead of turkey. Pizza was the biggest hit. Reading is going so well in our room. It's exciting to see all the kids start moving and grow as independent readers. Keep reading each day with your child at home. It makes a huge difference.

We started frames and arrows in math. You will see these lots from here on out into older grades. When the kids are doing them I always ask them: 1. Are the numbers getting bigger or smaller? (This will tell them to add or subtract.) 2. How much bigger or smaller? (This will tell them the number they need to continue the pattern.) We are constantly looking to find patterns in our math to make our problems easier. Skip counting during rides in the car is a great way to help your child with these patterns. First Graders should be able to count by 2, 5 and 10 to 100. We also practice counting by 10 starting at different numbers. This allows them to see how the tens place changes as the ones place stays the same.

We had a Veteran's Day Assembly on Wednesday. Mr. Morin, an ed. tech. at our school, presented about his eight years serving with the Marines.

Friday, November 17th we will be going to the UMaine Planetarium with our Peer Helpers. We will be seeing Magic Globe. It is a show that teaches about seasons.

Monday, November 20th and Tuesday, November 21st our entire school will be doing Service Learning. Kindergarten and Grade One is working together on both days. On Monday, we will be closing up the VCS garden to make sure it is ready for winter. We will also be picking up trash around our school and neighborhood. Please dress for outside weather. Gloves would be great, too. In the afternoon, we will help teachers in the building by sorting markers and seeing which ones still work, along with other small projects.

On Tuesday, we will be talking about hunger in the world. Students are asked to bring in at least one canned good. We will take all canned goods collected to the Holiday Train that is coming through the Coldbrook Road Railroad. We will stay and listen to their talk about world hunger and for their concert. Please dress warm. We will then be going to McDonalds for lunch on the way back to school. Students will need money for lunch and at least one canned good to turn in. We will be ordering happy meals. At the end of these two days, the entire school will come together to share how they made a difference in the world.

Permission slips will be coming home next week.

November break begins Wednesday, November 22nd.

Music Concert - Wednesday, December 6 at 6:00 pm in the gym.

December break begins Thursday, December 21st at 11:30.
