First Grade Newsletter and Pics 9-6-24

Hi! We wrapped up our first four day week. We are working hard on practicing our listening and following direction skills. We made our own Pokémon cards. They will go in a special book we make all year.

We started UFLI. I am not going to start the UFLI homework for a couple of weeks. I want the kids to get used to the process so they will understand what to do at home. I will give you a heads up before I start it. This week we practiced words with the short a sound. We also learned a few new secret stories that we found in our names. We learned when two vowels go walking only the first one does the talking. We learned ay and ey think they are way too cool so they say "AY" with their thumbs up. Th get in trouble when together and stick out their tongue. Sh are always in the library and get told to "Sh". Ch loves trains! They love the "Ch-ch-ch" sound they make. Sometime I sounds like an E because it likes to try on its super hero cape and make the E sound. These Secret Stories are just a fun way to help the kids stick the phonetic rule in their head.

We read from our Poetry Books. We get new poems each month. We also read big books and chart poems. We had fun acting out Five Little People. Ask your child about it.

We started our math books today. We had to count various things in the room. We then had to complete a dot to dot dinosaur. We learned how to play Bunny Hop, Number Squeeze and Penny/Dice. As we get independent with our math games, I will send home the rules in case you like to play games at home. :)

We went out to the garden today and checked out the sunflowers that we planted in kindergarten. They were so tall! We then picked blackberries and cherry tomatoes. We found a frog and looked really hard for a monarch caterpillar. We couldn't find one but Mrs. Richard found one later and sent us a picture.

Afternoon Break

We had visitors by the teacher's parking lot one morning.

We have a new short story each week that goes with our UFLI sound.
We practice reading it, find words and sounds in it, read it to a partner then finally illustrate it.
We will take these books home at the end of the year.
However, you will get a copy of each story each week once UFLI homework begins.

Playing an addition game with dice.

Afternoon Break

Sometimes when we finish our picnic snack early we get a few minutes with the older kids. :)
