SECOND GRADE NEWS 1-13-17

Hi! What a great week! We got a lot accomplished! We took our very first standardized test, NWEA, on our Chrome books on Thursday. We took the math portion. At the end of the year we will take Math, ELA and Science. I was so proud of the kids! They were serious and tried their best for an hour. It’s hard to stay focused, work hard AND be quiet that long in Second Grade! We continued with our Science Unit on Matter. We made root beer floats and talked about how all three states of matter are in one float. Everyone was excited to see how delicious science can be :)!

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We are still reading Cynthia Rylant books. We are using her books to talk about character traits, setting and summary. We picked one of her books to read alone. We then wrote about the book on “popcorn kernels.” Cynthia Rylant stories really POP!
We talked about biographies as we read books about Martin Luther King, Jr. We then interviewed a classmate so we can try writing one of our own.
We are working with sixth grade on a writing project. We made snowmen out of paper. We then wrote directions on how we did it. We gave our directions to the sixth graders. They are now trying to make our snowmen. On Monday, we are going to get together to compare our snowmen with theirs’ and talk about how we did at writing directions.

MATH

We learned a couple of new games, Spinning for Money and Adding / Subtracting Ten and Hundred. Keep practicing counting money at home. It helps.
