PICTURES 1-29-16

We did some research with our Peer Helpers this week! We learned about a place that we would like to visit, used Pages to write up our information and then taught the class what we learned.

We got our first FLAT STANLEY response!  It came all the way from Utah!

We played a map game!

We had fun re-writing a big book.  We each took a turn at being the BOSS! :)

We each took home a copy of our new book. Have your child read it to you!

We are so lucky to have two great University students with us this semester!
We welcome Haley on Wednesdays and Fridays.

And...Adam is back for another semester with us!! He will be with us on Mondays and Fridays!

As we were reading TREASURE ISLAND four old maps fell out of the book!
We checked out the map keys and figured out they were ancient maps of our school.
Of course we just had to follow them :)!
(Good thing we have such awesome map skills!)

First we made a plan with our team.  We looked at the key and studied the map.

One team ended up in Mr. Cyr's office!

Each team found treasure!!!

We piled all of the treasure that each group found into the middle of our circle.
We found diamond rings, precious coins, jewels, necklaces and gold!
Thank goodness there was plenty for everyone!

Congratulations to this guy right here! He performed at our school talent show tonight!
Excellent job!!!

NEWSLETTER 1-29-16

Hi! We finished up most of our map unit today in a very exciting way! As we were reading, TREASURE ISLAND, some old maps fell out of the book. We were surprised to see they were maps of the school! We followed them and actually found some treasure!! Ask your child about it! We will continue with maps as we get mail from our FLAT STANLEY project. We actually got some responses already this week :)!  We will begin a two week study of American symbols and presidents.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We worked with a big book called, BOSS FOR THE WEEK.  We used it to learn how to infer as we read. We were amazed at what we can figure out by reading stories even if they  don’t come right out and tell us. We also worked a great detail on the CH sound.
We rewrote BOSS FOR THE WEEK.  We turned it into BOSS FOR A MONTH. I found out very quickly that first graders LOVE to be the boss ;)! They had fun creating rules for the day when they could be boss.
MATH

We finished our first math journal! Chapter five assessments are complete. We will begin unit six next week.

FACE TIME

We had so much fun today talking on Face Time to one of our classmates that moved to Michigan!
We each asked a question about Michigan and found out that it is very similar to Maine.
It was a fun way to explore our United States map.

PICS from 1-22-16

Did you know that every time you order from Scholastic Book Clubs our classroom earns free books?! These are all the books I was able to get thanks to your January orders! The kids and I thank you for making our reading time even more exciting! Feb. book orders are due Friday, Jan. 29th.

We completed a two day project!
We wrote Haiku about snowmen to go with it!

Our finished product!

We made snowmen and wrote directions on how to build a snowman.
This helped us practice using transition words in our writing.
Here's our finished work.

Guidance class is always so much fun with Mrs. Walsh!
Today we played games that taught us about
expected and unexpected behaviors and how these
behaviors related to the four zones. Ask your child about it!

Two First Grade authors sharing their latest work.

We love birthdays in First Grade!!

A little earned free choice time is a perfect way to end our Friday!
