First Grade News

 Hi! We are full swing into our space unit. We are writing facts in our Family of the Sun books as we "travel" to each planet to learn about it. After we make it through the planets we will learn about stars, asteroids, meteors and even the ever so popular black holes! Two days a week we are still doing Go2Science. We are currently in the Galapagos Islands looking for penguins! We will keep these units through February break.    

READING AND WRITING

The kids are doing a great job reading. They are loving bringing books home to share with you two or three times a week. Please make sure to listen to them read their book the night it comes home and then send it back to school the next day.

We've read almost every Robert Munsch book! It will be sad when we finish. The kids are LOVING his stories. Ask your child which book has been his/her favorite so far. We are also on book four of Dragon Masters. It's a great chapter book series we read after lunch recess each day.

We are writing in our journals each day and writing about space. We have continued to work with syllables, ed endings, sight words, digraphs and blends. If you see your kids writing at home, encourage them to leave spaces in between words, capital letters to begin sentences and punctuation. If they ask you to spell something for them, have them try it once first and then show them how close they got.

MATH

We are working with place value. We learned about expanded form which is when you take a number a part and make it into a number sentence. For example: 46 = 4 tens and 6 ones = 40 + 6. We even did some in the hundreds. We also worked with measurement. We drew lines with rulers and then made number sentences about them. 

ITEMS OF INTEREST

* There is a really cool space app that you can get for free on your phone. It's called Skyview. It will tell you what is in the sky above you wherever you are. The kids would love to check it out!

* Progress Notes came home Friday afternoon. We will be doing these every two - three weeks just to keep you updated.

* Monday, January 18th - No School.

* Wednesday, Feb. 3rd is our next early release day.

* Friday, Feb. 12th is our Valentine's Day Celebration. More info. will be coming out on that soon.
