FIRST GRADE NEWS 1-17-20

Hi! What a busy week! We really dove into both our space and map units. The kids are enjoying learning new facts each day. They are also VERY excited to send out their “flat” selves to a friend or family member. Don’t forget to send in an address if you haven’t yet. It’s always a huge day when we get mail and get to mark it on the map!

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

Everyone is working really hard during our entire Literacy Block. We rotate stations every 20-25 minutes between Book Boxes, Spelling, IXL Phonics, Big Books, Word Work and Guided Reading Groups. We’ve also been doing lots of writing. This week students wrote non-fiction about space in their FAMILY OF THE SUN BOOKS, published Astronaut shaped books and learned how to use the Comic Writer on Portaportal! Everyone finished and published at least one comic! You can use our classroom Portaportal by going to www.portaportal.com. The guest password is VCS2. The kids are very good at using it!

MATH

We started Unit Six in our second book. We are working with finding the difference between numbers by counting up. We are also practicing counting up and back by ten from any number. We are learning time to the minute. The book has us learning the hour hand for now. In class we are working on finding the hour first then how many minutes passed the hour.
