FIRST GRADE NEWS 1-3-20

Hi! It’s great to be back at school with the kids. They look well rested and seem to have grown a foot! I always love this time of year in first grade. The kids start to really take off and get more independent in their own learning. We also have some of the best units ahead! Our new Science unit will be on Space and our new Social Studies unit will be on Maps.

We took some time to ease back into school these past two days. We spent Thursday toasting the New Year...literally, we made toast! We also talked about our goals for the remainder of grade one. On Friday, we had some fun with snowmen. We read, THE SNOW CHILD,and made our own stuffed snowman. We had fun reading to them and writing stories about them.

SOME NEW THINGS

We will begin two new things next week. The first being what we do for Morning Work. The kids will be practicing their ELA and Math skills independently when they come in each morning. We will then go over what they do together. These papers will not look graded when they come home since we will go over them together. If you happen to notice something that your child has not fixed or finished, please talk about the skills with them.

During Math, 3-5 times a week, we will begin our lesson with Level Up Math. This is a fun way to practice math facts. Students will try to do as many math facts as they can in four minutes. If they finish all 25 successfully, they will level up the next day. If they do not finish or get some wrong, they take home to fix/complete for homework. Then they will try again the next day. This is our order of skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. (Yes, some first graders have even made it to division!) There are about 10-14 levels in each skill.

HOMEWORK

Math and Reading homework will pick back up next week. Spelling lists will begin to come home again on Mondays. As your child starts reading longer books you may keep the book a couple of nights, share the book (you can take turns reading pages) or have them read their favorite 2-3 pages. Sometimes, I may have them just finish their book at home. They will know what to do. Their Morning Work and Level Up Math papers will be in their folders as well.

Here’s to a great 2020!
