Hello! We've had a great week! We finished up our last "new" unit in Math. Unit 9 reviews each previous unit. We are almost done our math book! Everyone did really well with the ce sound. I also skipped ahead and did a lot with open/closed syllables. This will help the kids read and write multisyllabic words. They just need to focus on one syllable at a time. They know how many syllables by how many vowels (silent e counts with the letter it's working with, team vowels count as one and R controlled vowels count as one). If a syllable is open, most likely it's a long vowel and if it's closed it should be a short vowel. Next week's UFLI sound is ge which makes the /j/ sound. I will also be adding in word endings (ed, es and ing). We've already done a lot with them throughout the year so it should be a good review.
We were so fortunate to have George Stevens Academy Steel Drum Band come and play for us. We even got to try playing ourselves. I'm proud to announce that first grade started and lead the Conga Line! These kids know how to party! HAHA!
A few things are coming up next week on our list of events. We will be taking our end of year tests, NWEA, on Tuesday and Wednesday. We will be having a special guest reader on Wednesday afternoon because our class won the MEA reading incentive we participated in. Friday we have our trip to The Grand in Ellsworth to see One Morning in Maine. We come back, eat lunch and go right to our Flex Friday activity.
Looking to the week after, students will need a white t-shirt to tie-dye. You can send them anytime before.
We learned about sea horses, megalodons, harbor seals and sea lions. I told them to ask you and their grandparents if they ever saw Andre, the harbor seal, in person. He lived with the Goodridge family in Rockport, ME. There is a statue of him there now. It's a great book and movie, too. I'm not sure we will get to either so you can check it out for a summer read!
