NEWSLETTER 2-10-17

SECOND GRADE NEWS 2-10-17

HI! What an exciting week we’ve had! We finished reading the Nikki Powergloves series by David Estes. We did a PBL, Project Based Learning, activity in Science. We researched cats and dogs and wrote  position papers on which would make the best pet. It was certainly a busy week...especially with a delay and a snow day! No wonder I’m tired ;)!

TOY MONSTERS

We worked with a partner or small group to design a toy monster. The monster could only be 40cm x 30cm. It had to be fuzzy, flexible, smooth and be able to stand on it’s own. The teams had to go “shopping” for supplies and were only allowed to spend $20. It was great seeing the kids planning, designing and building. They used their knowledge of matter to make sure they were buying the right materials to address the properties needed in their monster. It was amazing to watch them work together and think up things I wouldn’t have thought of!

NKKI POWERGLOVES DAY

First of all, THANK YOU, to everyone who sent in items to help with our power cooking and party! A special shout out to Kim Taylor for coming in to help and cook! We started our delayed day with a photo op of all the awesome costumes. We made power chests out of popsicle sticks and glues. These will hold our powers while we aren’t using them. We also made Weebles. They will be a cute and friendly addition to your home. However, please...do not feed them after midnight!! We made our own power pizzas to go with our power drinks, power puffs, power cookies, power fruit snacks and power Lifesavers. We each have a copy of the Power Team Cards from the books. We made our own SECOND GRADE POWER TEAM CARDS book. We got to do some of our own Power Rankings, too! A few items needed to get pushed to the next day due to our delay but it was still the best day ever!!

A FEW MORE THINGS

We are talking a lot about different parts of grammar. This week we focused on nouns, pronouns, verbs and adverbs. In Math, we started learning about arrays. Right now we are using them for longer addition problems. However, these will turn into multiplication problems before too long! In handwriting, we are trying to only use uppercase letters when they are needed. This is a hard concept to remember!
