First Grade News 2-26-21

Hi! It's crazy how much the kids seem to grow over vacation! It's great to be back with them. We've been very busy this week. We finished our Family of the Sun books and learned about the moon. We did a project with the moon phases. The kids are supposed to hang it by their window to help them identify the moon phase each night. They even have a calendar that they can keep track of it on so they can see the pattern! Next week we will finish up our space unit as we learn about stars.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

This time of year is so exciting to watch and be a part of! The kids are really taking off and becoming so independent and fluent! This being said, it's very important to keep this going. Please make sure your child is reading each night for at least twenty minutes. You can use books from home, Literacy Footprints or Epic online or let us know and we will send a bag of books home that are on your child's level. You can return for more when they are done with them.

We are enjoying listening to some great stories the kids are writing. They LOVE sharing them as well!

MATH

We learned something new! We worked with Fact Families. This has the kids using dominoes to find three numbers (each side is a number and then the total). With these three numbers they then make four number sentences. It's another great way to practice addition and subtraction facts. It also helps them manipulate numbers and transfer what they know from addition to subtraction.

We are taking part in a Prodigy Math Competition!!! It starts Monday and runs the entire month of March. We're hoping to show everyone just how amazing our math skills are here in Veazie!

ITEMS OF INTEREST

* Thank you to the Tocci family for donating a huge set of snow toys. We have already had fun using them to make things at recess.
