Pics Week Ending 4-8-22
First Grade News 4-8-22
Hi! We have successfully turned half our room into a rainforest! It helped us write great stories this week! We are very excited to share our play, room and stories with you on Wednesday, April 13th at 8:30 am. We will be on stage in the cafeteria. Families and friends are invited. The play is about fifteen minutes and then we'll take you back to our room for another fifteen. If you would like their older siblings to come watch, just write their teacher a note excusing them at 8:30. Younger siblings will see it during our dress rehearsal.
We painted our scenery this week on Monday. On Tuesday, we met with Maine author, Chris Van Dusen, on Zoom. Wednesday, our peer helpers started our rainforest with us. Thursday and Friday were filled with adding to our rainforest, writing rainforest stories, reading and telling time in math.
Next week we will be quite busy between the play and our field trips. Thursday will be our trip to the Old Town YMCA for Wellness Day. Please have your child wear comfortable clothes and sneakers. We will NOT be swimming. Friday we will be going to the Maine Discovery Museum. The bus leaves at 9:30 and returns at 1:15. Students should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers. Donations to cover the $5 admission and $50 program fee are appreciated.
Happy Weekend!

FIRST GRADE NEWS 4-1-22
Happy April Fool's Day! What a day! Ask your child how many times we pranked them haha. They might pull a few on you so I won't tell you what we did ;). We have reading lots of books about the rain forest trying to get ready to turn our class into one on Wednesday. We made sloths and lizards this week to put in the forest. It's always an exciting time in first grade!
We made a Rainforest Joke Book. We will read it to you after the play on April 13th. We also took the idea of Past, Present and Future from our play and wrote a book about ourselves. We read a book called Just A Dream by Chris Van Allsburg. It is such a great book to teach about taking care of the environment. Ask your child about it.
We learned about function machines in math. A number goes into the machine and changes into another number. We figure out rules by asking: Is the number getting bigger or smaller (+ or -) and how much bigger/smaller. Then we figure out what happens to other numbers that go through.
We have been working with long vowels, mostly the silent e. If your child is writing at home, they should be using this correctly. We have also talked about when two vowels are together the first one talks (usually).
We had our last swim/gym on Monday. This Monday will be a regular at school day.
