FIRST GRADE NEWS 11-19-21

 Good afternoon! We finished up our sound and light unit this week. We had fun making stained glass windows, working with flashlights and creating codes with light. We will continue with our fairy tale unit through the new year. We will add on traditions and legends, too.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

I am seeing some great movement in reading and writing! I love when they start taking risks and believing in themselves. It makes all the difference. Reminder to make sure your child reads each day during our November break. We don't want to lose any progress.

We read a nonfiction book on turkeys and then took information from it to write about turkeys. We have been looking for common characteristics in each fairy tale we read. We've been practicing reading the fairy tales all by ourselves! Their baby bear voices are the cutest!

We finished Charlotte's Web. It was a sad ending but great book! We found egg sacs in the Guess Box!

We are working on a fairy tale play. We are in hopes to perform it for families in December. I'm still working out the details to see if it is possible. I will keep you posted!

MATH

We finished unit three and took the assessment. Unit four will work with measurement, time and data collection. If you have a ruler or tape measurer at home, let your child try it out at home!

ITEMS OF INTEREST

* No school Wednesday, Nov. 24, 25 and 26. November break.

* Thank you to everyone who donated to our PTO auction basket!

First Grade Newsletter 11-5-21

 Hello! We are having fun learning about spiders and sound in science. We will add light to this next week. Reminder that parent/teacher conferences are Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon/evening. I sent a copy of your time home this week. If it didn't make it, send me an email and I'll get it to you.

Thank you to everyone that has already donated to our Primary Auction Basket and to everyone who donated treats and markers for our classroom. Thank you also for those that have already sent items in for our edible spiders!

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We started our unit on fairy tales in reading. We are comparing different versions of the same fairy tale as we look for the special characteristics that make a story a fairy tale. We are also reading fraction fairy tales to get us ready to write some of our own.

We are working with the short i sound in spelling and various beginning word blends. We started our November journals. We are becoming better risk takers every day. We are amazed at what we can spell when we try listening for sounds.

MATH

We are working with number stories with addition and subtraction. We also started frames and arrows. These have numbers in boxes (frames) that go a certain direction (arrows). We look for the pattern by asking if the numbers are getting bigger (addition) or smaller (subtraction). Then we ask how much bigger or smaller and complete the empty boxes. They will use these a lot in the math program from here on out.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

* No School Thursday, November 11th - Veteran's Day

* No School Nov. 24, 25 and 26 - Thanksgiving Break
