GRADES 1-2 NEWS
SEPTEMBER 15
MRS. KIMBALL

Dear Parents,

Hi! It was great seeing so many of you at Open House Wednesday night! Many parents were commenting on the pictures. Don’t forget you can see all of them and even take the ones of your child you like right on the blog. Just go to http://vcslk1.blogspot.com. The blog also has a copy of all newsletters on it.
We finished up our beginning of the year unit on friends and routines. We will start learning about space on Monday! This is definitely a favorite unit...start watching the sky tonight :)!

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We have finished all of the assessments and are ready to dive into our curriculum :)! We will be switching classes each day for Writing/Spelling and Math. Mrs. Logan will be teaching Writing/Spelling and I will be teaching Math. It will be awesome to have small grade level groups for these subjects. Homework will start coming home daily in math on Monday. Most of the days it will be from the Everyday Math program so you can see what we are doing in class. Occasionally they do not have an assignment so I will send a quick problem for them to do instead.

What great readers we have! We are working on our reading stamina during Reading Workshop. The only way to get better at reading is to read!
Some students have already started bringing books home to share. Be on the lookout for books coming home 3-5 days a week. When you see one in the folder it will mean your child needs to read it to an adult for practice or to themselves or to finish the chapter and/or book. It depends on where the child is in their reading development. They will know what to do :)! Please send each book back the next school day.

NWEA
Second Graders took their NWEAs this week. These are computerized, standardized tests in Math, Language and Reading. They did a great job for their first time ever taking a computerized test! We use these assessments throughout eighth grade to help teachers better meet individual needs. They are taken in the fall and spring. Of course Grades 1-2 had special snacks (popsicles and apples) and free choice each day after the testing.

ADDITIONAL INFO

We started Peer Helpers this week. Each Tuesday we will work with one of our two middle school buddies. This week and next is get to know you games.
We are halfway through our Pixie Tricks series. There are eight books in the series and we are having so much fun hearing them!
We’ve been watching Mystery Doug! He answers one science question a week. The clip lasts five minutes. The kids LOVE it. We have even sent him some of our own questions! I love seeing them thinking scientifically!

School pictures are this Wednesday!! Wear your best smile :)!

HAPPY WEEKEND!
