NEWSLETTER 9-21-17

GRADES 1-2 NEWS
SEPTEMBER 21
MRS. KIMBALL

Dear Parents,

Hi! I’m sending the newsletter early this week because I will be away at a conference tomorrow. We started our space unit. We learned about the different types of galaxies. We know that we live in the Milky Way Galaxy and it has a spiral shape. Our solar system is located on one of the spiral arms called Orion. We also talked about our nearest star, the sun. We will begin a trip through the planets on Monday.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We finished up our reading our Mo Willems books and moved onto Robert Munsch. He is hilarious! His books are great for practicing fluency and voice.
We are quickly establishing a routine to Reading Workshop. The kids are getting better at silent reading as I pull groups. Thank you for returning books quickly when they come home to practice.
We wrote about our favorite recess place and wrote questions we have about space. We learned about the parts of a letter as we wrote to our new pen pals. They go to school in Petaluma, California. We can’t wait to get letters back.

MATH

Both grades are working with skip counting by 1,2,5,10 and 25. We are using number lines and number grids to practice addition and subtraction. Grade One is working with ten frames to visually see and learn ways to make ten. Grade Two is working on adding pennies, nickels and dimes. We sort coins and then count starting with the highest valued coins.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

  • We did a multi day space project. We made ourselves on the moon looking at the night sky. Ask your child how we made them.

  • We are having fun acting out some of the poems that we put in our Poetry Books.

  • Math homework is now coming home Monday through Thursday nights. Books will come home two to three nights a week. However, students should be reading every night even if they do not get a book. If you need books on your child’s level, I can send a bunch for nights they do not bring a book home. Just let me know.

Happy Weekend!
