FIRST GRADE NEWS 10-16-20

Hi! We've had a jam-packed week - especially for a short week! We continued searching for the answer to our hypothesis: figuring out if deinonychus lived in Wyoming. It's amazing to listen to the kids conducting their own research on the playground and in the classroom. The words they now use and understand amazes me! We have one more week to solve our hypothesis. We then will take a short break from Go2Science as we learn about sound and light through Mystery Science.

We had fun learning about fire safety. Firefighter Pete came and visited. He talked about smoke detectors and kitchen safety. He even did a magic trick. It was awesome! Hopefully, your child made sure to remind you to check those smoke alarm batteries and talk about your escape plan and meeting place.

Mid-trimester Progress Notes came home today for all grades. This is just a quick check in on how your child is doing academically in the classroom. This class is doing great! We couldn't be more pleased with them and how they are progressing! Sign ups for conferences will be coming out soon. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be done through Zoom this year.

We have been reading and listening to LOTS of great Halloween stories and Firefighter stories. This in part to a new safety protocol that has started. We are not talking during lunch or snack while eating inside. Because of this we are taking the opportunity to get in 4-6 more read alouds per day! The kids are enjoying the stories and actually getting more food in their bellies. :) They have PLENTY of opportunities throughout the day inside with masks and outside w/o masks to talk. No worries...we're still communicating! :)

We are working with breaking a part number stories and number models into part/part/total. This helps us figure out what exactly we are looking for. Another thing that helps us is to see where we started, look at what changed (did it get bigger or smaller) and where we ended. We played Kahoot. The kids are doing great at remembering to start at the larger number, say it and then continue counting up the amount of the smaller number.

We made jack-o-lanterns for our windows in the cafeteria. Check them out if you drop off or pick up. We have quite the pumpkin patch! We've also been writing in our October Journals each day.

The Primary Wing is having a Fall Festival Week. It will happen the week of October 26th - October 30th. During this week we will have a special dress up theme for each day. We will top off the end of our week with special activities in the morning and a book character parade. Any costume, even a Halloween costume, will work for this. We are challenging kids to find a book to go with their costume. You don't have to own it but if you do, feel free to send it in. We might just have time to read it! If you can't find a book to match, no worries. Mrs. Logan and I are pretty good at matching just about anything to a book. We've got you covered! You will get more info on this next week but I wanted to give you a heads up.

First Grade is asking for donations of individually wrapped candy or toys. We know that because of Covid many are going to opt out of traditional trick or treating. We would like to gather things for the kids so we can make them each a special bag to take home with them on Friday, Oct. 30th. We're hoping this in addition to our parade and special activities will give them some kind of normal. Our parade will be at 1:00 and go down School St. to Oak Grove. Down Oak Grove to Olive. Up Olive to Flagg. Then through Flagg St. past the Senior Center and through the fields back to school. You are invited to park on the route to watch us walk by if you like. We will not be able to accept any hand outs. However, we love to wave! We'd also love to see decorations in windows as we walk by. Again, you will get this in paper form next week. :)

Reminder: We have an early release day on Wednesday, October 21st. Students will be dismissed at 12:10. We'll start getting ready at noon for those that like to avoid traffic at pick up. :)

Pictures coming before the night's over. Have a terrific weekend!
