First Grade News 10-23-20

Hi! What a crazy week...a day of remote and a mini day! We finished up our mission with Go2Science. We helped them solve their hypothesis by keeping track and looking at all of our evidence. We were able to say that yes, deinonychus did live in Wyoming at one time. We got to see one of the teeth from a deinonychus. It was so cool! Our next mission will be visiting some penguins in January. We will begin a sound and light unit in November. Next week we will be doing some spooky science! Also, next week will be our Fall Festival. We will be having dress up days, special activities and even a book character parade. Monday is Pajama Day. Tuesday is Hat Day. Wednesday is Wacky Wednesday. Thursday is Veazie Spirit Day. Friday is Book Character Day. If you have a book to match your costume, please bring it!

READING AND LANGUAGE

We are practicing sight words and doing lots of reading. We learned about bats as we pulled out important information in the text. Of course we now have bats hanging in our classroom! We wrote pumpkin stories in pumpkin shaped books. We are also still writing in our October journals. We'll be sad to say good-bye to them and our Halloween books next week!

MATH

We are working with doubles. We are practicing knowing each fact quickly. We are doing the same with all the ways to make ten. Please practice at home if you get a chance.

REMOTE LEARNING / SNOW DAY PACKETS

I'm hoping you all managed okay during our first remote day. It seemed to go really well from our end. We thought we should probably touch base about it. If we go remote again at a short notice, we will handle that first day just like we did Tuesday. You will get an email. Assignments will be on Google Classroom. Zoom meetings will be 9:00, 11:00 and 1:00. Since it is short notice you most likely will not have your child's chrome book at home. We will do what we can with what we have. Your child can come to Zoom and/or do the assignments. Your child can turn in their work through Google Classroom, email or bring it into school. We will then schedule pick up days for chrome books and work packets if we find we need to be out longer.

Snow days will be handled the same way. Snow day packets have come home today. Please put them somewhere you will be able to find them. Each packet has three days of work in them with directions. Zoom sessions will be offered if we have power and access to a computer.

COOL HAPPENINGS

* We are building an outdoor classroom. We've been working hard and having lots of fun! We hope to get to use it before it gets too cold!

* Book Character Parade - 1:00 Friday, October 30th. We will leave school, walk down School St. to Oak Grove. Then Oak Grove to Olive and turn onto Flagg to cut through the path to school. It will be PreK through Second Grade. Feel free to sit in your car or yard and wave to us as we walk by. We cannot accept anything though.

HAPPY WEEKEND!
