FIRST GRADE NEWS 10-2-20

Hi! Can you even believe it's October?! We're so proud of the kids for working so hard and transitioning fairly easily in to a new school setting. We are still learning about the scientific process as we try to help a paleontologist solve his hypothesis about the deinonychus. It's fun watching Beth and Curtis discover new things in Wyoming. We especially love it when they talk to us and answer our questions! We still have three more weeks of this program. We will switch to light and sound after.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We worked with the book, THE MEANIES. We drew our own Meanies. We practiced using adjectives to describe them as we rewrote the story. We got our own copies of Five Little Pumpkins. We have them in our book boxes to read during Reading Workshop. Everyone is doing a great job reading from their book boxes. They are plump full of books on their reading level.  We continued to work with short vowels in our Spelling books. We finished up with short a and started short e. We make sure we have a vowel in every word that we write!

MATH

We finished our Unit One assessment. Everyone did a super job. We are working with addition, tallies, graphs and combinations of ten. If you're looking for something to do in the car, give your child a number from 0-10 and have them give you the other number needed to make ten. Also, counting by two to 40 and tens from different starting points (like count by 10 but start at 3). This will help us recognize patterns when we hit place value.

TICKETS

We started a new reward system. The students are working hard to earn tickets. You will see some in your child's folder today. These tickets can be earned by: working hard, staying socially distanced, staying in safe spot (table/yoga mat spaces), being positive, being a good friend, listening, ect. When they get a ticket they write their name on both parts and cut it in half. Half stays here in their ticket box and half goes home so you can praise them for good work. When they get ten tickets they can go shopping for: hat pass, pajama pass, show and tell pass, read to class (with microphone) pass and bring a stuffy to keep at your work space pass. They will bring home a note saying it's okay for them to wear a hat or pajamas so you will know it's okay. We then will put their tickets in a pumpkin and at the end of the month we will draw three names for other prizes.

SAFETY

We reminded students today about the importance of social distancing, wearing masks and hand washing. Please remind them at home, too. It's hard when we start getting comfortable to remember we still have to be mindful of these safety protocols.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

* We played Guess Box and set our class record of 7 guesses! We guessed gourds. They came right from Mrs. Richard's garden. :)

* Reminder that there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, October 9th and Monday, October 12th.

HAPPY WEEKEND!
