First Grade News 9-15-23

Hello! We survived our first full week. However, we have lots of tired kids and one really tired teacher haha. This week we focused on what is special about each first grader. We had tons of fun sharing baby pictures and talking about how we got our names. We did a special project with the book, Dandelion, and our baby pictures. We didn't harm any picture and you will get them back. They are hanging in the hallway for a couple of weeks. We drew self portraits - can you say adorable?! The kids also put on their super hero capes and flew around so I could take their picture. They wrote I AM poems. They are bringing their copy of First Grade Superheroes home tonight. Make sure they read them to you!!

We started Peer Helpers today! We played board games that had the partners answering questions that would help them get to know each other. Ask your child about it.

HOMEWORK will begin Monday, September 18. Please be sure to check your child's folder nightly. First grade homework comes home Monday - Thursday. It should not take long. Right now all that will come home is math and UFLI (It's our new spelling/reading program.) Students will be assessed each Friday over the sound we work on throughout the week. You will not get a traditional list of words to study. Instead you will get letter tiles to keep at home to practice making words with our weekly sound in them. You will get a half sheet of paper that gives you different ways to practice each night. It is very short. You will get 1-3 words that cannot be easily sounded out to practice spelling. These are high frequency words. You will get more information on Monday. I just wanted to let you know it is coming. Also, I do not send math homework home if we are assessing a unit. The kids will know if they have math or not. The math homework gives you an insight to what we are working on each day.

As we get going in the year, books will come home. These will be new books that your child has read with me that they take home to practice. When you see a book in your child's folder, please just have them read it to a family member and then send it back to school the next day.

Another note about homework: I do not want it to interfere with your family time. I also do not want your child stressed out. I know you are all busy after school. If you have something going on that your child doesn't have time to complete it, save it and send it in when you it's done. Only Math and books need to be returned. The UFLI homework stays at home. This being said, homework is a great way for you to stay in touch with what we are doing at school and your child will benefit from the one on one time. The children will earn two gems each time they come in with homework done (whether it's day one or day ten).
