First Grade Newsletter and Pics 1/19/24

Hi! We had some great discussions this week about Martin Luther King, Jr.  These kids amaze me daily with their kind thoughts! We made snow people after reading, The Snowy Day. We then wrote about what we like to do in the snow. We started a more in depth look at place value in math. We use base ten blocks and coins to understand it better. We played the Exchange Game with our peer helpers. It's a fun way to practice place value that you can play at home! You just need pennies, dimes, a $1.00 bill and a dice. You take turns rolling the dice. Take pennies. When the pennies get to ten you exchange for a dime. After you get ten dimes you exchange for a dollar bill. First one to $1.00 wins. If you play it, stop every so often to ask your child how much money they have or how many tens and ones. I try to get the kids to line up their pennies and dimes in a ten frame shape so they can visualize making ten.

We had Flex Friday this week. Ask your child what they chose.

We learned about Mercury and Venus and added facts to our Family of the Sun books.

Thank you to Echo, Cam and Seif for donating markers for our communal bins and/or treats for the treat box this week! We really appreciate it!

Happy Weekend!
