SECOND GRADE NEWS

We had a great first full week of school! We continued learning about how the Earth changes quickly and slowly. We took a “trip” inside the Earth to learn the layers and what is special about each one.
We used the Lego WeDo 2 kits! The kids amaze me! It’s so exciting to watch them work through their builds and then program their robots. The language they use to communicate with each other is wonderful to hear!

We learned about antonyms and synonyms in our Spelling. We went hunting for the short e sound as we edited stories. We’ve had two Spelling / Dictation Tests now. The Dictation part of the test lets me see if the kids can transfer what they learned. I look to see how many words are spelled correctly, especially spelling words. I also look at conventions;  spacing between words, capitals and punctuation.

In Math we played Fishing for 10 and the Exchange Game. Fishing for 10 is just like Go Fish but you have to make 10 (take out the face cards and the ace is one). The Exchange Game starts with 20 pennies, 10 nickels and 10 dimes. You roll a dice to see how much money you take. Players keep exchanging until all money is gone. Sort the change and count dimes, nickels and then pennies to see who had the most. These are great games for home as well! We used calculators to practice skip counting. We solved problems in our books that made us find ways to make a number without using a certain key (Use your calculator to make 25. Your 5 key is broken.). It was amazing to hear the ways the kids came up with!!

We officially started our writing program. We are really looking at how authors use words to create images. Ask your child about s/he is writing about.

It was great to see so many of you last night at Open House! Progress Notes will start next Friday. Have a great weekend!
