FIRST GRADE NEWS 8-30-19

FIRST GRADE NEWS
AUGUST 30
MRS. KIMBALL

Hi! We’ve had a great first three days. We are quickly picking up our new routine
and expectations. We got to know the school again by going on a scavenger hunt.
It took us all over the school and when we finally got back to our room we found
punch and sloths waiting for us! It was very exciting!  This is going to be an
unusually long newsletter so don’t forget to check out the back :)!

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We worked on identifying punctuation to help us know how to read the text. We had
phonic centers and sight word games. We practiced finger pointing as we read our
Poetry Books and Nursery Rhymes book. Our author of the month is Mo Willems.
We already love him. His books are hilarious and so fun to read. We wrote on sloths
about what we like to do when hanging with friends.

MATH

We started our math books! We are practicing counting up and back by 1,2,5,10 to
100. Any help at home with this would be great! We are working to make sure our
numbers are all going the correct way. We played Number Squeeze. We tried out
our Challenge Math Board. The number changes daily on it. When students have
extra time they can challenge themselves to answer ten questions using that day’s
number. Math homework will begin coming home daily the first full week of school.

BEHAVIOR

I’m sure you have been hearing about gems :). These are what the students get
when I catch them being good listeners, working hard, being kind or even taking a
risk at a new skill. When they get ten gems they get to go shopping in the Good
Behavior Catalogue. There are twelve things they can pick from. They are:  Hat
Pass, Pajama Day Pass, Show and Tell Pass, No Homework Pass, Treat Box, Line
Jumper, Pick your Partner, Extra Computer Time, Read to our class or another, Read
to Mr. Cyr, No Shoes Pass and Bring a Stuffy Pass. This being said, I can use your help
on the treat box. If at anytime during the year you come across things in your house
you might throw out, feel free to donate it to our treat box. We also love any type of party
toys or bags with little toys in them. We take anything except food. Thank you in advance
for your help with this :)! The gems are a great motivator! Who doesn’t like getting paid
for a job well done?! However, sometimes I need to use other types of motivators to
encourage expected behavior. I give the child one free reminder (“the eye” or verbal).
This is like strike one. The next reminder earns a little stop sign (strike two). This is a
visual reminder that strike three is approaching. The third reminder is strike three and
that means you are out of recess or our next break as we need to talk privately about
how this behavior is going to change. I never take an entire recess. I know first graders
need to move! If there is a strike four, that is time in the office discussing behavior with
Mr. Cyr or Mrs. Dineen. You will be notified if this happens. For the beginning of the year
I start over after lunch. I do recognize normal first grade behavior. I’ve been at this a
LONG time haha.  Progress Notes will start coming home in a couple of weeks. These
will also let you know how your child is doing. They come home on Fridays.
