First Grade News 9-30-22

Hi! What a week! We started off by learning about John Chapman, Johnny Appleseed. We made homemade applesauce which turned out amazing! We found the star in the apple. Ask your child about it. We've read lots of apple books and apple poems. We even read a book called Ten Apples Up On Top and then had fun putting paper apples in order on top of our own head!

We worked with the short e sound in spelling and word work. Any chance you get have your child sound out some CVC words for you with e or a in the middle. We will not have a spelling test next week since there is a teacher inservice day on Friday. However, we will be continuing with short e this week and next putting the two short weeks together.

We started a new unit in our math books. We are working with ways to make ten. We are trying to be able to instantly know all the ways we can make ten. This will help us know our other addition and subtraction facts quicker.

We have been writing in our journal daily. We are working on stretching our words out to hear as many sounds as we can. It is definitely more important to try to sound it out and get it wrong than it is to give up! We are working on being brave spellers.

I'm really impressed with how many students remember to do and bring back their homework! Students get two gems each time they do. Also, if it doesn't come in the next day, they get gems the day it does come back. Today everyone picked out a book that they would like to read to someone at home this weekend. I hope you enjoy a good book with your little one(s).

Thank you to Bryce for bringing in bookmarks for us to use!

Thank you to Baxter for all the treats he brought in for our treat box!

There is no school Friday, October 7th and Monday, October 10th.

The book order is still due Friday, Oct. 7th even though there is no school since they can be done online.

Happy Weekend!
