FIRST GRADE NEWS 10-25-19

Hi! We explored and learned about sound this week. We learned that sound is made from vibrations, travels in sound waves and is measured in decibels. We experimented with tension to change vibrations in string to make different sounds. We will continue with sound and add light next week.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We are working on pumpkin shaped books. We have been talking a lot about how stories have beginnings, middles and endings. We are also looking for the problem in each story to see how it is developed and solved.
We learned a new phonics activity called Word Stairs. They loved it so much they asked to have one for homework. You could actually use the same words to start each time and still end with something different. I challenged the kids to try changing the middles. It’s great vowel practice!

MATH

We learned how to do Frames and Arrows. You will see them a lot from here on out. They did a great job figuring out the rules. We always ask: 1. Are the numbers getting bigger or smaller? This will tell you to add or subtract. 2. How much bigger or smaller? This will give you the number. I even tried to trick them by giving the last number so they would have to reverse the rule in order to get the other frames. They love to be challenged!

ITEMS OF INTEREST

• ●  A heads up on Halloween. We are ​not​ wearing costumes to school during the day. We want to make sure they are good to go for that night. The student council will be holding a Halloween Hullabaloo that night from 4:00 - 5:30. The PTO is sponsoring Trunk or Treat at the same time in the parking lot.
  
• ●  The VCS Silent Auction is approaching. The Primary Wing is working together to fill a basket for it. The name of our basket is A COZY NIGHT IN.
