NEWSLETTER 10-12-18

FIRST GRADE NEWS
OCTOBER 12
MRS. KIMBALL

Dear Parents,
Hi! What a crazy weather week! We were feeling like summer for a couple of days. We've been very busy these four days. We started a mini unit on spiders to go with our new read aloud, CHARLOTTE'S WEB. We will continue with spiders as we begin a unit on sound and light next week.

READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

We started guided reading groups. Books have come home twice this week. Thank you to those of you that listened to your child read, signed the bookmark and sent both back in the next day. You will be getting books now 3-4 times a week. Many of the books are quite short. Feel free to have your child 'show off' his/her skills and read to lots of different family members, pets, stuffed animals...
practice will help us become better readers!

We wrote a sequel to PIXIE TRICKS! It's called PIXIES AT V.C.S. We worked together on parts of the story. We then split up and wrote a page by ourselves or with a partner. We can't wait to share it with you after the play.

MATH

We learned about unit boxes and how to use the start, change, end strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems. We learned a new game called Rolling to 100. It has students using a chart to find out how many spaces to move on a hundreds grid. It gets the kids used to moving up and down rows when counting tens vs. side to side for ones.
