First Grade Newsletter and Pics 10/17/25

Hello! Why are short weeks always our busiest? We had fun with a couple of projects this week. We rewrote our big book, Mrs. Wishy-Washy. We turned it into Wishy-Washy First Grade. We finger painted with "mud" and even ate some! We also used tinfoil to "tie-dye" our paper so it would look like water.  The best time was when we had to look muddy for pictures...some had to wash more than others at the end of our project haha.

We learned about the famous painter, Edvard Munch. He painted, The Scream. We then drew and painted our own versions. Instead of painting a person, we used a picture of ourselves. We are going to do some Halloween writing with them next week.

Some of the first graders started bringing home books to read. Whenever you see a book in your child's folder, that means they are supposed to read it to someone and return it when done. It's okay to keep it for a couple of days. When it comes back, it goes in your child's book box for more practice. These are books I read with them in group or individually. As books get longer, your child will know if they are supposed to read the whole thing, pick a favorite page or just a chapter. We are working hard to make sure what we read makes sense both in meaning and in letter sounds. Also, if your child gets stressed at all, take turns reading and help them out. It's supposed to be a positive experience. :)

UFLI homework begins on Monday. We do lots of practicing at school for the weekly new sound. Any practice at home will help towards mastery in both reading and writing. We will begin having weekly assessments on Friday. I will give you lots of ways to practice if you choose to do so.

It's starting to get colder on the playground. Feel free to leave gloves/mittens, hats, an extra sweatshirt, and/or coat in your child's locker. Please label whatever you can. :)
