First Grade Newsletter and Pics 5/8/26

Hi! It's great to be back with the kids. Although, Texas was a lot of fun and the Robotics Team did a great job at World Competition. Monday was May the 4th Be With You Day. We had fun doing lots of Star Wars related activities! Tuesday, we celebrated Cinco de Mayo. We especially like learning the Mexican Hat Dance and eating chips and salsa! Thursday, we went to the Collins Center at UMaine to see The Science of Magic Show. It was amazing! Friday, we had a visit from Mrs. French. She taught us all about bike safety to get us ready for our summer rides!

We also continued with our rivers and oceans unit. Last week the kids made up their own type of river and wrote about it with Mr. Baker. They are hanging in the hallway. We started reading ocean books this week. We also spent time looking at the World Map. There were 160 teams from all over the World competing in Texas. All the teams exchanged buttons and stickers. I brought back lots for the first graders to choose from. They had fun looking to see where their buttons/stickers came from!

We learned about writing narratives. We talked about how there are watermelon stories (big ideas) and seed stories (more detailed smaller parts of the watermelon stories). We made watermelons and hung seed from them. We then used the seed ideas to write our own narratives. They are hanging in the hall.

This time of year gets really busy. Be sure to check our list of events to keep up on the fun.
