First Grade News 3-3-22

Hi! The kids came back from vacation well rested and ready to work. We started our rainforest / environmental unit this week. It will run through April vacation. We started a play called An Earth Day Carol. We will perform it on Wednesday, April 13th at 8:30 in the cafeteria. Mark your calendars. Family and friends are invited! The play will last about 15 minutes and then we will invite you back to our room to check out our rainforest!

We started working with Peer Helpers. This is a long standing tradition in Veazie that sadly got stopped for the past couple of years due to Covid. Wednesday, we brought it back! Your child has a seventh grade buddy that they will work with for 40 minutes each Wednesday morning. This week we worked on sight word games. Activities will change each week. Ask your child about it!

We stared writing workshop! The kids get 20-30 minutes each day now to just write. They can get comfortable in any part of the room and use whichever writing supplies they choose. Miss Bilodeau and I check in with individuals to work on specific skills. As they finish, they have an opportunity to share with the class and get great feedback! It is the highlight of their day!

We learned how to use name collection boxes in math. They are given a number and are then required to put as many different ways they can think of to make that number. We talked about what to do if you can't think of one - start with adding/subtracting zero or one and turn around facts. Then our brain juices will kick in and get creative. We had fun making name collection boxes about ourselves. They were so cute telling everyone the sweet nicknames you parents call them.

Miss Bilodeau did a really cool lesson on how bird use their beaks to eat. Ask your child about it!!

SWIM STARTS MONDAY!!!!

Don't forget to pack your child's swimsuit and towel.

Water bottles and goggles are optional.

Please pack swim stuff in a separate bag in their backpack.

Students should dress in comfortable clothes and sneakers. Shorts are even okay under sweats.

Happy Weekend!
