First Grade News 9-17-21

Hello! What a crazy week! We seem to be getting more and more in quarantine. Please, if you haven't signed up for our Testing Pool, do. This makes it so your child will most likely not have to quarantine. It's also so easy! I am a big baby when it comes to needles and things like this. I'm doing it and it's honestly nothing. It barely goes into your nose and actually tickles. It is not a regular COVID test from last year.

I have made up a Quarantine Work Letter to help you if your child get's quarantined and is not sick. This will give them things to do at home while they are out. I will add the letter to our blog so you can find it here, too.

We have had so much fun reading our First Grade Wishy-Washy books. They are coming home today or as soon as possible. Have your child read their's to you!

We are working with the short a sound. We've done lots of rhyming with at and an. Our spelling books are getting more familiar and easier to use.

We have a University of Maine student starting with us on Monday. Miss Bilodeau will come each Monday and one full week this Fall Semester as she is working on becoming a teacher. We welcome her!

We made pineapple people...just because this class is so SWEET!

We took our reading and math NWEAs. These are standardized online assessments that help me get to know your child better. We will take them again in January and June. No worries if your child missed. I will make it up with them when they return.

We started Reading Workshop and Buddy Reading. These kids LOVE to read. It's so exciting!! I will start sending home books for them to read to you soon. When one comes home in your child's folder, please listen to them read it and send it back the next day. Remember, your job as they read is to just be so excited and complimentary! You can help them by reminding them to look at the pictures, get their mouth ready for sounds and think about what would make sense. Praise all attempts. Risk taking at this age is a very brave thing and is to be celebrated! :)

I can't wait to start getting more students back next week. I miss everyone! I'm hoping that we're adjusting to it all now so we won't have to again this year! (One can hope, right?!)

Have a great weekend and stay healthy! :)
